Case in point: Once we started to really learn more about infrared saunas (and even frequently use one ourselves!), our interest piqued, we did our homework, and we made a little magic happen for you…
Before we dive into all the details, let’s back up. Wondering what in the world an infrared sauna is? We’ve got you! Below we’ve rounded up all the FAQs, research, and results being seen with this incredible treatment.
What is an infrared sauna?
By definition, an infrared sauna is a type of sauna that uses light to create heat. Also known as a far-infrared sauna, where “far” describes the place at which infrared waves fall on the light spectrum. Infrared saunas are contrary to a traditional sauna, which use heat to warm the air. Infrared is much like the type of warmth we naturally receive from the sun.
What are the health benefits?
Infrared light safely raises your internal, core body temperature and promotes healing as you sweat. It can also “increase endurance, stamina, acquisition of muscle mass, and create an increased capacity for stress tolerance…also know as hyperthermic conditioning.” (Patrick) The endorphins produced by many of these effects can give you feelings similar to those described as a “runner’s high”.
Additional cited health benefits are as listed:
The widely-respected Dr. Frank Lipman even recommends you add the infrared sauna to your “must-do list”.
What type of infrared sauna is available at The Still Point?
Our brand of infrared sauna, made by Sunlighten, creates the safest products on the market, with ultra-low EMF (electromagnetic field) technology using Solocarbon heaters. If that sounds like a big scientific jumble to you, you can also read more background on it here.
Sunlighten saunas are also some of the most effective on the market at delivering true infrared light (and not just hot air). All of Sunlighten’s products use Solocarbon® infrared technology, with both visible and invisible light wavelengths, clinically tested to lower blood pressure, increase core temperature and aid in weight loss.
What’s some of the research?
Since the effects produced by the use of an infrared sauna are similar to exercise, they can even improve cardiovascular fitness. One study demonstrated that a “30-minute sauna session two times a week for three weeks post-workout increased the time that it took for study participants to run until exhaustion by 32% compared to their baseline” (Ferris).
Infrared saunas are highly recommended for reducing one’s toxin load. Much of our toxic receptors/releasers are stored in the liver, so if there’s a build-up, especially of heavy metals, it can affect other bodily organs like our skin – one of the primary organs through which the body eliminates toxins. Break-outs often start with what’s going on internally. Regular sauna use can help speed along your toxic cleansing process, improve liver functioning and even clear-up your complexion.
Infrared sauna use can also be an excellent practice for women who are planning to become pregnant, prior to the time of conception. Some research has suggested that with use up to 30 times within the 6-months leading up pregnancy, infrared saunas can get rid of stored tissue toxins that could have an impact on the baby while they’re in utero.
As mentioned above, the list of benefits are great and the research is vast. Depending on your health goals, regular infrared sauna sessions can assist you in achieving them.
What are the cautions?
While infrared saunas are safe and beneficial (just think how good a natural dose of sunny Vitamin D is for you!) it is important to consider factors like overheating, thermo-regulation, and dehydration. Such preparations and precautions will be explicitly outlined for all clients.
Although our brand of sauna creates the safest products on the market, some people may still choose to avoid it as much as possible. You can read more about EMR testing and sauna safety here.
It is best for women who have become pregnant or are nursing to avoid them.
It is also important to properly hydrate and replenish after use, as it’s possible to sweat up to 1 pound in a 30-minute session.
How hot does it get?
Our infrared sauna will be somewhere between 110°F and 130°F. The temperature is actually lower than what’s usually experienced in a traditional sauna – it feel much like getting into a hot car in the when it’s cool outside and the sun has heated it. However, what’s more important than the temperature is that you’re receiving authentic infrared light. You may not even sweat the first few sessions as your body acclimates to the light.
How long do I stay in it and how often can I do it?
A purification session is 40 minutes, but your first three sessions will be 20 minutes each to build up the detoxification process and to acclimate to the sauna.
How much does it cost?
Pricing is $35/session for 40 minutes ($31.50 for Promise Program Members). The required intro package is $20/20 min, sold in a 3 session pack for $60. ($54 for Promise Program Members). Purchase and book sessions on our website or give us a call at 301.920.0801.
There you have it! We can’t wait to see you and hear how our new infrared sauna services help improve your overall health and well-being. We are now scheduling sessions for November and will be happy to answer any other questions you may have.
