Meet Massage Therapist, Lili Fuentes

What got you into massage?

Wow. This question seems so easy to answer doesn’t it? I have been in the athletic world since I was three years old. Science has always been a point of fascination for me since I could read at the tender age of…well, whenever you start reading. As I grew older and delved deeper into the world of sports, science slowly began to weave its powerfully curious tendrils into and throughout that world. What do I mean? Training. Injury. Recovery. Rinse and repeat. I was always the one teammates would turn to for stretches and pain management. In my teens, I turned to massage for tension relief on my arms and shoulders mostly; I played softball and basketball all throughout high school. I didn’t formally dive into the wonderful world of massage therapy until about 10 years later. By then, it just all made sense to me: I could continue in the world of athletics and gain extensive training into the human body, while learning to heal, soothe, and relieve pain all at once. Brilliant!

Why did you join TSP?

I am actually an outsider! I’ve moved up here from the crazy city of Miami, where I was born and raised, and lived my whole life; up until November of this year, 2019. I was looking for jobs in the area and I came across TSP, so I applied. When I spoke to Tori, our amazing boss, I knew this would be a perfect fit. It had the tranquility I was looking for, in a rather hectic job market for massage therapists. We’re in a pretty high demand in the DC/MD area, but I didn’t want just any place to use me as a machine; I’m no spring chicken! When I visited the site and spoke to Tori during my interview, I was hooked. The way she believes in caring for her practitioners really went a long way towards me saying I was all in. So here I am!

What does self-care look like to you?

Ideally, I view it as trying to be physically, emotionally, and mentally balanced. That’s such a hard thing to do when you’re running around trying to make life picture-perfect. I strive constantly to take time and just breathe in life and take each day one at a time. Making sure you laugh, have fun, and be kind goes a long way to making this a reality for me. Oh! And get some actual fresh air outside once in a while!

What do you do for fun?

I’m just going to come out and say it; I’m an odd bird. One day I can spend it reading whatever current book I’m on without leaving the confines of my pillows and memory foam mattress; the next, I can stay out driving and/or exploring my surroundings on bike, learning the terrain. Seriously, I never know which way the switch is flipped until my eyes open that morning!

What’s something you are currently struggling with?

The speed limits around this town! I mean, 35 miles an hour on a state road?! I guess it’s fine though. I see it as helping me breathe that fresh air I was talking about earlier; kind of difficult to do that going 60, trying not to eat your own ponytail with the window down huh ?
