Q&A w/ our Naturopathic Doctor
Meet Dr. Hanna Schmittat! She is our in-house Naturopathic Doctor, as well as anAcupuncturist and Homeopath. As a lover of all things holistic, she couldn’t stop at just one healing modality. Check out our interview with her below!
Q: Why did you choose a career in both naturopathic medicine and acupuncture?
My Japanese and German background, and my experience in both cultures, provided me with insight to how both Western-based Naturopathic therapies and Eastern-based Acupuncture were both of great value to patients.
My love for travel and healing has brought me to different parts of the world where I’ve learned and shared healing experiences with local residents. Among the most recent abroad trips were in Guatemala, Jamaica, and India.
In Guatemala, I volunteered my Naturopathic and Acupuncture skills to provide care to populations with less access to health care. In Jamaica, I studied from local Jamaican healers about the art of using Jamaican herbs, many of which are also frequently used in the states. In India, I studied Advanced Homeopathy from a world renowned Homeopath, where she also shared her expertise in Acupuncture and naturopathic physical medicine with local Homeopaths.
Q: What’s your approach to treatment?
My approach to treatment for every patient is patient-centric, wholistic, and prevention based. I believe that the role of a doctor is as teacher, to empower patients to take care of their health. The body has an innate ability to heal itself when the right support is given and the obstacles removed.
Each individual is assessed for their most important health goals, after which I determine the most appropriate course of laboratory assessments, physical assessments, and treatment protocol. Treatment protocols could involve Homeopathy (the healing therapy treating “like with like”), Nutrition, Herbal Medicine (using plants as medicine), physical medicine, lifestyle counseling, and Acupuncture.
Q: What kind of patients do you frequently treat?
I frequently see patients who come in with Pain as their main complaint: back pain, neck pain, shoulder pain, headaches, wrist, ankles, etc. I’ve seen much success using Acupuncture and nutrition advice in pain-focused cases. I also regularly support women with fibroids, infertility, amenorrhea, painful menses, and IVF support.
Acupuncture is not only helpful with fertility or for pain-related issues. It’s a system of medicine that deals with all illnesses, just as a General Practitioner would see all cases. There is an acupuncture treatment for almost any ailment, since it was China’s primary form of medicine before the introduction of “Western Pharmaceutical Medicine.”
Q: Are there other services that you recommend to your clients?
I recommend the Infrared Sauna for anyone with colds and flus, muscle spasm, joint stiffness, pain, those who want to lose weight, those with certain dermatologic conditions, those who want to start a detox protocol, and those with high blood pressure. However, I also recommend that prior to starting Infrared Sauna visits, that people check with their healthcare practitioner or myself to see if the sauna is contraindicated for them.
Q: What aspect of your healing work do you incorporate in your daily life for yourself?
On a typical day, I start my day with reading an inspirational quote, followed with yoga, then a wholesome balanced breakfast that is Blood type O specific. I also support myself with herbal blends and certain vitamins to ensure that the body is working at optimum. At some point in the day, I will also take time out to walk or jog in nature.
