Q&A with Dr. Kachina Smith

April 04, 2018

Hi! I’m Dr. Kachina Smith. I’m a DC area native and went to the Maryland University of Integrative Health for my masters and doctorate in Acupuncture. I am also an Acupuncture Detoxification Specialist, certified by the National Acupuncture Detoxification Association.

Why did you choose a career in acupuncture?

Acupuncture chose me. Actually… its more accurate to say it found me. I started as a pre-medicine student and intern at the University of Pittsburgh. The only thing I ever really wanted since preschool was a career in medicine. I was dedicated to my dream and tried multiple avenues, working in many specialties, to continue working in medicine after realizing medical school was no longer an option. While working through my own health challenges, I went to a summer retreat through the Edgar Cayce Association for Research and Enlightenment (A.R.E.) My instructors recommended I develop my natural gifts with energy medicine. From there I was lead to acupuncture which, to me, is a marriage of physical and spiritual energy medicine. It certainly has been the right path for me.

What’s your approach to treatment?

I utilize my experience and training in both Western and Chinese medicine to understand your current state of health and develop your customized treatment plan. I also provide cupping, gua sha, Chinese dietary counseling, and some other Asian bodywork techniques as needed for client care. My approach to treatment, aside from focusing on holistic care, is looking at who are you today, who do you want to improve to be, how to maximize your positive life experience, and, most importantly, how do we get there.

Meanwhile, when you enter my treatment room it is a personal sanctuary for every client. Your comfort, trust, and safety are of the utmost importance. If there’s a day when you arrive for treatment and aren’t interested in much talking, or if the opposite is true, this is your private time. My treatments are for healing, rest, reflection, and if nothing else a brief time of peace.

What kind of patients do you frequently treat?

Any and everyone who wants to and is ready for change frequently see me for treatment. All my clients are seeking what I call “life relief” – physical, mental, or spiritual release and resolve of what’s blocking their continuous growth and quality of living. Some other common reasons for treatment are stress relief, transitioning through life changes, cancer, chronic medical conditions, headaches, and, the list really isn’t limited.

I participate in Community Acupuncture here at The Still Point and give treatment to all who are welcome. A special offer for clients at The Still Point is the AcuGlow treatment. If anyone is interested in using beauty secrets from the Far East as another natural option for healthy skincare, come see me! Along with acupuncture body points for relaxation and addressing your skin care needs, facial cupping and gua sha are used to shape, lift, and tone as well as reduce swelling and inflammation.
