Stress and Dis-Ease

February 15, 2018

When you feel stress in your body, either physical or emotional, your nervous system is sending you a message. These messages may come in the form of a tension headache, muscle pain, indigestion, or interrupted sleep. When you notice these feelings of uneasiness, you have an opportunity to respond. You can either give your attention to your body or you can push through any discomfort.  without making any changes to your situation.

Regardless of your response, your body is always trying to get you back to a state of homeostasis, or inner balance. Sometimes our bodies overcompensate and try to help too much. Our senses register fear, anger, upset, or stress, and often overreact. Adrenaline surges through your body and emergency alerts get set off from every corner of your being. While it’s important to have these response systems in place, we NEVER want our bodies to overdo it. When our unease, or dis-ease, flares up repeatedly and without respite, actual disease or imbalance has room to damage our immune system.

In order to stay in balance and regulate our nervous system’s ability to handle daily stress in stride, we need to interrupt all sources of stress. You can do this by infusing your life with healthy habits.

Seemingly simple steps, like:
-drinking water throughout your day
-eating whole foods
-cutting down on alcohol consumption
-eliminating smoking
-prioritizing restful sleep
-engaging in daily movement
-receiving therapeutic treatments
can make a significant difference in your overall health.

Interrupting rising stress in your life is a necessary step to creating long-term habits. You can start with quick response to rising anxiety and see how your feelings shift. For example, if you realize a brief power-walking session lowers feelings of anger that you’re carrying in your body, start walking on a regular basis to see if it can create an extended sense of peace.

You can go deeper and sustain the power of everyday “stress-interruptions” by scheduling treatments like bi-weekly massage or monthly acupuncture. These professional services provide powerful alignment for your nervous system which can result in a more resilient immune system. When you make your health a priority and create sacred time to decompress and heal any tension in your body you are actually reducing inflammation. Massage, acupuncture, and other healing modalities focus on dispersing blockages and reducing inflammation. By incorporating professional therapeutic treatments into your wellness routine, you teach your body new ways to process stress and allow the body to return to balance without trauma. There is no reason you should endure stress that can manifest into chronic discomfort, or worse, life-threatening disease. The long-term benefits of a healthy lifestyle, on the other hand, can lower medical costs, unlock more profitability in your career, and foster happier relationships. It’s time to leave the stress behind and live a fuller life!
