Tara Brach: What We’re Listening To

I spend probably 18 hours a week in the car and most of the time listen to podcasts. I’ve curated a great list of thought-provoking, educational, insightful hosts who never fail to make me think different or deeper. I share these all the time with my friends, family, and clients, and now will toss the best of them into our “What We’re Listening to” blog post series. I hope you enjoy!

For those of you in the DC area, and even as far as Howard County, we have a very special teacher, Tara Brach, whose wisdom is truly a unique gift so close to home. Her podcast tops over a million worldwide downloads, and is recorded from her group meditation and lectures in Bethesda each Wednesday night. I can attest to the power of meditation and learning in this setting and I encourage you to attend one of these evenings soon.

Today I listed to a recent lecture on Fear of Failure (FOF) and Fear of Missing Out (FOMO). Another favorite podcaster, Tim Ferris, coined FOMO in an earlier interview with Tara and she elaborates on it from her Western Buddhist perspective. FOF and FOMO are very rooted in the primal and mammalian brains and therefore a part of our human experience. We are addicted to the dopamine hit we get always being in the know so that taking a break feels like we are missing out on something. This lecture dives deep into this phenomenon and gives useful tips on how to choose presence when being tempted by the fray.
