It’s likely you’ve heard about the explosion of popularity that celery juice has seen in recent months. According to its proponents, “Fresh celery juice is one of the most powerful and healing juices one can drink. Just 16 ounces of fresh celery juice a day can transform your health and digestion in as little as one week.” That’s a pretty bold claim. So what exactly is behind this sudden surge in interest in what has been traditionally seen as one of the less exciting vegetables?
WHERE DID IT COME FROM?
Interestingly, this “new trend” isn’t so new. Anthony William, also known as the Medical Medium, has been advocating for the health benefits of drinking celery juice on an empty stomach since 1975. Among its benefits, William counts aesthetic improvements, like clearer skin and weight loss, and a feeling of improved well-being (less bloating, more energy, and stable moods).
Further, he even claims that celery juice can help people heal from various acute and chronic illnesses including autoimmune conditions, IBS, thyroiditis, fibromyalgia, eczema, addiction, and gout, among many others.
HOW DOES IT WORK?
Although a bit out there (William claims he got this information from a voice that talks to him that he calls spirit….), William’s claims have valid scientific back-up. Indeed, celery contains many chemical components and has several qualities that can be beneficial to the health.
First, celery contains the organic compound couramin, which can enhance the activity of white blood cells, promoting healing. It also contains apigenin and quercetin, which work against inflammation and improve digestion.
Celery can also ease heartburn, indigestion, and bloating by stimulating the production of stomach acid, and help keep your body clean and toxin-free by working as a diuretic, encouraging your body to flush out waste more often.
And that’s on top of the known health benefits of the many vitamins and minerals found in celery juice, including vitamin A, magnesium, fiber, and iron.
WE GAVE IT A TRY
This celery juice “miracle cure,” as some are calling it, has received rave reviews and endorsement from everybody ranging from a typical, health-interested Instagram users, to social media influencers, to celebrities like Kim Kardashian and Gwyneth Paltrow.
Being steeped in the world of alternative medicine, I do a ton of research on super trendy topics such as this to more obscure, less know “bio hacks” that may safely improve my wellbeing and health as well as that of our clients. As for adopting a morning routine of celery juice, one thing is for sure…no one is going to get hurt doing it and I highly doubt a big corporation is behind the celery farmer’s lobby making tons of money. So it piqued my interest enough to dust off the old juicer and give it a try.
William emphasizes consuming the juice in the right way and right amount. That means at least 16 ounces, on an empty stomach, every single morning. That way, the juice has as few obstacles as possible on its way through your body, starting first in the liver. I found that one big bunch makes almost exactly 16 ounces and it takes exactly 5 minutes to do, including clean up of the juicer and composting the fiber. I make this immediately upon waking and then eat breakfast 30 minutes later.
It’s been exactly two weeks, $32 (an organic bunch at Harris Teeter costs $2.25), and 224 ounces of celery juice later and I feel measurably better than before. For one, I am sleeping through the night. I have habitually been waking to go to the bathroom and 50% of the time take about 30 minutes to get back to bed. 14 nights of solid sleep – I’ll take it! The other really big change is in my digestion and bowel movements. As an acupuncturist this topic is front and center when assessing whole-body health. Let’s just say what was sluggish and questionable is trains-on-time perfection.
What may be THE BIGGEST unexplainable profound change is that I don’t crave or want coffee.
Despite some late work nights and back to school craziness, I think my eyes look brighter. Whiter whites and improved dark circles. I definitely should have done a before-and-after photo (although honestly I don’t think there will be an after!) Lastly, it could very well have to do with the self-care routine, but I just feel better. Elevated mood, proud of the self-care ritual, I start my day off right and it positively infects the rest of my day. I plan on keeping this a part of my morning routine for sure.
So I’m a convert! I highly recommend giving it a try. What do you have to lose?
