Deep tissue massage done well is not about intensity for its own sake. It is about reach, and reach requires preparation. A skilled therapist does not simply dig in deeper. They warm the tissue first, working progressively through the surface layers until the body allows deeper contact rather than bracing against it. What they are working toward is the fascia: the connective tissue that surrounds and runs through every muscle in the body, forming a continuous web of structural support. When fascia becomes restricted through stress, overuse, or prolonged tension, it loses its pliability. The resulting tightness can feel deep and unshakeable, because it is. Surface pressure does not reach it, rather sustained, intentional work does.
Who it’s for
Deep tissue massage tends to help people who carry chronic tension in specific areas such as the neck and shoulders, the low back, and the hips, or whose bodies accumulate restriction over time through physical work, repetitive movement, or sustained stress. It is also useful when a pattern of tightness is limiting range of motion or affecting how you feel day to day.
It is not the right tool for every body in every season. If you are not sure whether it is what you need, that is worth a conversation when you book.
How we offer it
At The Still Point, Deep Tissue is a distinct service, available with practitioners who have completed our internal certification for this work. Not every therapist on our team offers it — it requires a specific physical approach that is its own discipline, and the therapists who do this work have trained for it specifically.
Some post-session soreness is normal. What follows, for most people, is a release that holds.
